Language Sponsors of Immigrants at Osdorf

Most immigrants are motivated to learn German and attend the integration courses which have been offered since January 1, 2005. Nevertheless, many of them fail because they cannot cope with the difficulties as a result of their deficient educational background. This makes it hard for them to keep abreast with the requirements of the curriculum. Another fact is that many immigrant students are unable to attend regularly classes because of illness or of reasons concerning their families. To be able to integrate themselves, they definitely need more individual help and more intensive teaching.

Since October 2006 IBH has supported a project at Hamburg-Osdorf, where immigrants have the opportunity to improve their language competence through individual tutoring, if their living conditions prevent them from regular school attendance. This applies frequently to pregnant women, young mothers or older immigrants who cannot always cope with the course assignments. Without an adequate command of German they can hardly participate in social life. Ten honorary language sponsors have joined in a project which is designed to help immigrants in these specific situations. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the Preuschhof Foundation for their financial support of this project.
